JDRF Houston Promise Ball raises $1.8 million to fight diabetes

An Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-inspired “Through the Looking Glass” theme set the tone for a magical evening at the 2018 Promise Ball, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Chaired by Charity and John Todd, more than 1,000 guests turned out for the black-tie affair, which honored Linda and Bob Brown, along with corporate sponsor Sendero Midstream Partners, LP, for their support of the nonprofit.

The night kicked off with a cocktail hour, held in the vibrant foyer-turned-garden, as several storybook characters, from Alice to the Queen of Hearts, mixed and mingled with attendees.

Host of Texans TV Drew Dougherty, who attended the gala with his wife, Vita Montalbano Dougherty, and Andrea Bishop, wearing a Christian Siriano gown selected for the occasion by the designer, welcomed guests as they entered the massive Texas Ballroom for a multi-course dinner and program.

The Stephens-Broussard family shared how they have been impacted by type 1 diabetes during the Fund A Cure portion of the evening. Board of Directors member, Meredith Cocke, presented longtime volunteers Suzette and Marshall Lang with the Meredith and Fielding Cocke Visionary Award.

The Young Leadership Committee hosted a lively after-party boasting late night casino games, a champagne reception and performance by Skyrocket!.

Proceeds from silent and live auctions, with items from two black Labrador puppies to a private yacht cruise for eight around the Caribbean, and a raffle featuring a pair of 20-carat red diamond earrings from Nacol & Co., contributed to the more than $1.8 million raised for JDRF, whose mission is to progressively remove the impact of diabetes from people’s lives until we achieve a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Supporting JDRF were Ted Bowen IV, Gray Thornton, Maggie McKethan, Holly Crawford, Rob and Mallory Williams, Angie Douty, Katie and Mason Hester, William Hagans, Jance Aracely, Suzette and Marshall Lang, Iris Cross, Larry Wright, Amy and Chris Josefy, Hong and Ethan Martin.
